We are looking for our next Chief Strategy Officer. Reporting to the CEO, this role is responsible for overseeing the strategy and research team, the federal partnership team and the national engagement team. This role will lead a team of experts identifying future trends and opportunities in the field of investment attraction. The Chief Strategy Officer will build strong relationships across all levels of government ensuring that it identifies key priorities related to sectoral and market objectives. They will also support other business units by providing valuable insights and value propositions to assist in facilitating investments as well as supporting the development of world-class marketing campaigns. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities for this role may include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Leverage the Government of Canada’s strategies and priorities to identify investment attraction opportunities and future trends. Provide direction and alignment between internal and external stakeholders on sectoral and market priorities. 
  • Implements and oversees the national engagement strategy and the overall role that Invest in Canada plays at the regional level, supporting our partner organizations, educating and working with TCS officers, and collaborating internally with the Investor Services and Marketing/Communications teams. 
  • Nurtures positive and productive relationships with key contacts in the Federal government to ensure Invest in Canada is remaining relevant and accurate in its approach as the coordinating body in FDI within the Government of Canada.
  • Ensure the products and services offered by the Strategy and Engagement business unit are aligned with the strategic priorities of the Government of Canada.
  • Oversee the services and products offered and developed by the Business Intelligence teams and ensure their alignment with Invest in Canada’s main sectors, the Government of Canada’s sector strategy related to FDI as well as world-leading global experts, business leaders and academics.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Political Science or related field 
  • Graduate degree is considered an asset (MBA or in a related field)
  • 10 + years of experience developing and overseeing the implementation of organization-wide strategies
  • 5 + years of people management experience
  • Excellent communication and writing skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with partners and clients.
  • Ability to think strategically across the entire organization and deliver comprehensive and thoughtful strategic advice in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with the development of relevant and impactful KPI’s and/or organization-wide evaluations.
  • Excellent ability to develop and provide research, critical insights and support across the organization. 
  • Solid leadership and people management experience leading high-performing teams.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to think creatively and provide innovative solutions.
  • Strong understanding of both the Canadian and global business environment.
  • Effective public speaking abilities
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of the federal government departments, programs and processes.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and the work of key partners (think tanks, etc.)
  • Strong business acumen and experience in evidence-based decision making. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working in both the public and private sectors is an asset.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for meetings, presentations and events.
