EV supply chain
Powering
electric vehicles
Canada is the only country in the Western hemisphere with an end-to-end supply chain for electric vehicles (EV). Global companies are choosing Canada to access the materials and clean energy needed to build cathodes, anodes, batteries and parts for the North American market. If your company is looking to plug into the EV supply chain, Canada is the place to be.
Canadian EV supply chain leadership
Electric vehicle supply chain: Industry overview
Mining and mineral processing
Canada has a thriving mining industry. The only country in the Americas with all the minerals needed to manufacture EV batteries, Canada is drawing major global investment.
Battery manufacturing
Canada is a prime location for ethically sourced minerals that battery cell manufacturers need to create clean, sustainable products.
Global companies like Stellantis and LG Energy Solutions are making major investments in electric vehicle battery manufacturing facilities in Ontario as the industry grows at a rapid pace. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, New Flyer is building fuel-cell battery electric buses, the very first to run in regular service.
Cathode and anode manufacturing
Cathodes make up approximately 51% of the total cost of an EV battery. Industry expertise, extensive trade agreements and ready access to abundant minerals combine to make Canada a cost-effective and globally connected option for cathode manufacturing.
Electric vehicle manufacturing and parts supply
Canada has a thriving automotive industry and an established vehicle supply chain, making it a natural choice for electric vehicle and parts manufacturing.
It’s drawing international investment, including Belgium’s Umicore. The company is building a $1.5 billion manufacturing facility in Ontario for cathode active battery materials and their precursor materials used in EVs.
Battery recycling
As the North American leader in battery recycling technology, Canada offers a stable source of recycled materials for new batteries.
Li-Cycle and Lithion Recycling have both developed patented processes that recover and recycle approximately 95% of the materials in an EV battery. The purity of the recycled materials is on par with freshly mined minerals, meaning that batteries can be recycled over and over again.
