Disclaimer for STEM Enrollment and Graduate Datasets:

This database highlights the student enrollment and graduate counts by Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) 6-digit series. This publication uses publicly available data from the Statistics Canada date tables (Table 37-10-0163-01 Postsecondary enrolments, by International Standard Classification of Education, institution type, Classification of Instructional Programs, STEM and BHASE groupings, status of student in Canada, age group and gender, and Table 37-10-0164-01 Postsecondary graduates, by International Standard Classification of Education, institution type, Classification of Instructional Programs, STEM and BHASE groupings, status of student in Canada, age group and gender, both of which were updated and released in November 2020) to conduct a detailed feasibility study (conducted jointly by Invest in Canada and Statistics Canada) in 2021. This data elaborates on the publicly available data and helps create a strong analysis against STEM enrolments and graduates.

The analysis of data relies primarily on data from Statistics Canada’s Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) for the 2018/2019 reference year. While the publicly available PSIS data is only at the province and national level, and at the 4-digit CIP level, this more detailed dataset is provided at the 6-digit CIP level, and also by the Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) / Census Agglomeration (CA) levels of geography. The figures provided here are the product of a particular methodology, which includes assumptions on which subsets should be dropped or included for further analysis. This study does not supplant official estimates released by Statistics Canada based on the PSIS. Rather, the aim is to provide additional insights into understanding the geographical spread of STEM graduates across the country.

Disclaimer for Mobility Data:

The estimates contained in this publication are drawn from a combination of data sources (Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS), Annual Income Estimates for Census Families and Individuals (T1 Family File (T1FF)), and Standard Geographical Classification (SGC) 2016 - Volume I, The Classification). This publication also uses publicly available data in the Statistics Canada data tables to conduct a feasibility study (conducted jointly by Invest in Canada and Statistics Canada) in 2021. The data was retrieved from these sources in January 2021.

The analysis of data relies primarily on data from Statistics Canada’s Postsecondary Student Information System (PSIS) and Canada Revenue Agency T1FF tax data. More specifically, using Statistics Canada’s Education and Labour Market Longitudinal Platform (ELMLP), PSIS data for the 2016 calendar year post-secondary institution graduates were linked with 2018 T1FF tax data. This linkage formed a novel database capable of tracking students from enrollment, through to graduation, and multiple years post-graduation (however only if a given graduate filed income taxes in Canada in a given reference year). The figures provided here are the product of following a particular methodology, including assumptions on which subsets should be dropped or included for further analysis. The study that has been used as their source do not supplant official estimates released by Statistics Canada based on the PSIS. Rather, the aim is to provide additional insights into the geographical mobility of post-secondary graduates within Canada.
