Recognized as an innovative and visionary leader, strategic thinker, change-maker, and catalyst for economic inclusion, The Honourable Laurel Broten (B.Sc., B.A., J.D., ICD.D, ECO) brings 30 years of experience to her role as CEO of Invest in Canada.
With expertise in business development, environmental sustainability, and fiscal responsibility, Laurel joined Invest in Canada in 2022. Since taking the helm, the organization has expanded its reach and impact, bringing international companies and transformational investments to communities across Canada and across a range of sectors and industries. A keen champion of the country’s competitive advantages, Laurel leads a team of professionals who help global enterprises navigate Canada’s business and regulatory environment.
A lifelong advocate for creating inclusive and diverse workplaces and opportunities, Laurel has ensured Invest in Canada’s workforce is as diverse as the Canadian population it serves. She exemplifies the pan-Canadian nature of the organization, having lived and worked in six provinces and being fluently bilingual. A trusted builder of connections, Laurel is known for making meaningful and beneficial partnerships between business, government and community.
Laurel is a multi-award-winning CEO who acquired her vast experience in both the public and private sectors. After graduating with distinction with her Juris Doctor from the University of Western Ontario, she clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada before practicing as a commercial and civil litigation lawyer for ten years with three leading law firms. This was followed by a decade serving as a member of the Ontario provincial parliament in various ministerial positions, implementing numerous policies to improve the health and socio-economic status of women, children and underrepresented groups. Laurel then launched her own public policy consultancy firm, during which time she conducted the first-ever comprehensive assessment of Nova Scotia’s tax and regulatory system. She was then appointed President and CEO of Nova Scotia’s economic development agency. Under her eight-year leadership, clients reported unprecedented market growth - including during the global pandemic - when businesses in other jurisdictions sharply declined. With that same passion and focus, Laurel is now driving economic growth at a national level.
