Power up
energy investments

Canada is a global energy superpower – and a smart place to expand. Canada's $318 billion energy sector offers investors opportunities across clean and conventional energy such as renewable power, LNG, hydrogen and biofuels. As the world's fourth largest oil producer and a top 10 hydrogen market, Canada combines vast natural resources with cutting-edge clean technology. The sector is powered by over 316,000 highly skilled professionals with deep technical knowledge.

Energy projects now benefit from faster approvals and financing through Canada’s Major Projects Office (MPO), a single-window service that fast-tracks processes for large-scale infrastructure, energy and resource projects deemed nationally significant while also encouraging alternative forms of energy that combine profitability and sustainability. The One Canadian Economy Act reflects the federal government’s proactive strategy to reduce risk for energy companies by prioritizing major projects and shortening federal approval timelines to as little as two years. This helps create a more predictable and business‑friendly investment environment nationwide.

Biofuels

Canada’s biofuels industry is gearing up to meet growing demand for ethanol, biodiesel and renewable diesel surges. In addition to a reliable supply of agricultural, forest and organic waste, companies benefit from extensive fuel infrastructure, including blending facilities and distribution networks.

Backed by business-friendly policies and a stable investment climate, it’s a smart place to grow.

Oil and gas

Canada is home to 10% of the world’s proven oil reserves – the largest open to free-market investment. Its stable regulatory framework and established infrastructure make it a magnet for global energy companies.

The country is also emerging as a global source of LNG. With the infrastructure in place to support LNG exports, it’s a high-value, strategic choice for energy companies.

Cost competitiveness
in Canada's
energy sector

Canada’s energy sector is increasingly cost‑competitive due to a comprehensive suite of federal Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits (ITCs) designed to attract capital, reduce project risk, and improve long‑term returns. Through these incentives, Canada offers refundable tax credits covering a significant share of capital costs for clean electricity, carbon capture, hydrogen, clean technology and clean technology manufacturing projects, helping to materially lower upfront investment requirements and boost project value by up to 50%.

Indigenous partnerships
and economic reconciliation
in Canada’s energy sector

Indigenous partnerships have become an important factor in Canada’s modern energy sector and a cornerstone of economic reconciliation. Indigenous Nations are increasingly participating through consultation and Impact Benefit Agreements, as well as by being equity owners and co‑developers in major oil and gas, electricity and clean energy projects. Equity ownership has proven especially transformative. Indigenous Nations now hold stakes in pipelines, transmission lines, renewable power projects and LNG facilities, creating stable, multi‑generational revenue while also improving investor certainty.

To address historic barriers to accessing capital, governments have introduced targeted financing tools, including the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s Indigenous Equity Initiative, which provides low‑cost, long‑term loans to support Indigenous equity ownership in major energy and infrastructure projects, helping Indigenous Nations participate as full economic partners.

Indigenous leadership is also central to Canada’s clean energy transition, with Indigenous communities leading or partnering in a significant share of renewable electricity projects nationwide.
