Value Added Agriculture

Cultivating
innovation

With 158 million acres of agricultural land and an annual sector value exceeding $149 billion, Canada offers a complete ecosystem for agriculture investment. The country ranks #1 globally for food quality and safety and is a world leader in canola and pulse production. Canada is also one of the few countries with a strongly export‑oriented agri‑food industry. It consistently ranks among the top 10 agri‑food exporters worldwide.

Canada's diverse climate zones support a wide range of crops and agricultural activities. The Prairie provinces offer ideal conditions for canola, wheat, pulses and oilseeds, with rich soil and sufficient growing season. Ontario and Quebec excel in dairy, specialty crops, and produce. The West Coast’s mild climate supports berries, tree fruits, and greenhouse operations year-round. Atlantic Canada’s crab, lobster and salmon are prized in global markets. This rich variety makes Canada a top destination for agri-food investment. Across the agribusiness sector, global companies with bold ambitions are drawn to Canada’s rich ecosystem of research institutions. Significant public and private investment in R&D keeps Canada at the forefront of agri-food innovation – from AI-powered farming to advanced food processing technologies.

Alternative proteins

Alternative or plant-based proteins produced from protein-rich crops offer tremendous opportunities for global companies with bold ambitions responding to rising demand for non-meat alternatives.

As the world’s largest exporter of pulses – including chickpeas, lentils and soybeans – Canada attracts global players. Companies such as Agrocorp and Roquette are leveraging specialized expertise in researching, developing and growing alternative proteins to serve markets across Asia, Europe and North America.

Canola

Canada is the world’s largest canola producer, cultivating 30% of the world’s crops and leading with 60% of global exports. Canola grows mainly in the western provinces, with Saskatchewan producing 55% of crops, followed by Alberta at 29% and Manitoba at 16%.

Recent canola investments include a major expansion of Louis Dreyfus Company’s canola processing facility in Saskatchewan.

In 2025, Canadian farms seeded 21.5 million acres of canola, while exports of canola seed, oil and meal reached $14.5 billion the previous year.
