Carbon Management

Scalable
carbon solutions

Canada’s carbon management sector plays a crucial role in the country’s economic growth strategy. Join global companies expanding to Canada for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and direct air capture (DAC) opportunities.

Expanding your business to Canada means gaining access to top-tier engineering and scientific talent, together with world-class research and testing facilities. Eight publicly funded laboratories and test beds for developing technologies, along with university-operated and private labs, make Canada a major contributor to the industry’s global growth.

Canada’s Carbon Management Strategy positions the country as one of the most attractive destinations for projects in the sector. By accelerating research, development and demonstration (RD&D) and advancing predictable policies and regulations, Canada promotes early adoption and builds confidence.

Discover the opportunities in Canada’s carbon management sector.

Carbon capture, utilization and storage

Canada’s geological and technical expertise position it to lead in developing and implementing CCUS on a global scale. CCUS solutions capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions directly from power plants, factories and industrial facilities. The captured CO₂ is stored underground or used in industrial processes.

Fuelled by the world’s most educated workforce, your CCUS project is primed to scale up for long-term success.

Western Canada offers extensive storage not found in many other parts of the world. Its well-developed pipeline network can be repurposed to transport CO₂ from capture sites to storage locations.

CCUS firsts make Canada a global leader

Canadian and global companies are investing in transformative projects – shaping the future of CCUS and meeting the growing global demand for carbon credits.

CarbonCure is a Nova Scotia company whose carbon utilization technologies inject captured CO₂ into fresh concrete – reducing costs, driving profitability and meeting global demand for green building materials.

Shell Canada’s Polaris facility is set to capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2  annually from the Scotford refinery and chemicals complex in Alberta, significantly reducing emissions.

Heidelberg Materials is creating the world’s first full-scale carbon capture project at its Edmonton, Alberta cement plant. The facility will capture over 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

Air Products is building a $1.6 billion hydrogen production and liquefication facility in Alberta that will capture 3 million tonnes of CO2  annually and produce 1,500 tonnes of hydrogen a day.

A partnership between 6 of Canada’s largest oil sands companies, Pathways Alliance is planning a carbon capture and storage network and pipeline. Once operational, other oil producers and industries seeking CO2 emissions sequestration can tap into the facility and pipeline.

Carbon removal technologies

Carbon removal solutions are essential for a clean energy future. Canada is leading the way by advancing direct air capture (DAC) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. DAC and CDR remove carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere and store it or use it in products. The technologies are designed to reverse the buildup of greenhouse gases that drive climate change.

Companies with bold ambitions entering the industry benefit from early-mover advantage and long-term returns in a market expected to grow quickly. Canada introduced the world’s first government-backed direct air capture (DAC) offset protocol in 2025. The protocol aligns with international standards, enhancing the credibility and market value of DAC credits.

Canadian startup Deep Sky built the world’s first cross-technology carbon removal centre in Alberta. The company is planning a facility in Manitoba that will pull carbon directly from the air and store it underground.

Fast-tracked approvals and incentives to support your success

Canada’s Major Projects Office now offers financing for energy projects, together with faster project reviews and simpler regulatory processes. Approvals are fast-tracked to a maximum of 2 years, making it easier to structure deals and access capital.

Canada offers government programs and incentives to fuel growth in carbon management technologies:

Canada Infrastructure Bank: Invests in revenue-generating infrastructure projects that benefit Canadians, including CCUS projects.

CCUS Investment Tax Credit: Applies a tax credit to eligible costs for qualified CCUS projects. Offers engineering, scientific and technical guidance.

Canada Growth Fund: Invests in low-carbon projects, technologies and businesses.
Clean Fuels Fund: De-risks capital investments to build new or expand existing clean fuel production facilities, including facility conversions.

Strategic Response Fund: Supports large-scale projects through funding for innovation, technology development and capital investments that modernize operations and expand industrial capacity.
