Strategic destination for vaccine manufacturing

Canada is building a resilient ecosystem for next-gen vaccine technologies, including mRNA, protein-based and plant-based platforms. Global companies are leveraging Canadian expertise to research, develop and commercialize new vaccines. For investors, the country offers a strategic opportunity to accelerate commercialization and reduce risk.

Strong public-private partnerships are at the heart of Canada’s next-gen vaccine production leadership. These partnerships and investments include:

Health research funding: The Canadian Institutes of Health Research invests over $1 billion each year in health researchers and projects, giving the industry access to top expertise and funding to research, develop and commercialize products.

Human Health Therapeutics Research Centre: This National Research Council centre designs, develops, tests and produces innovative biologics with industry partners. Companies can tap into expertise, pre-clinical R&D, lab support and a clinical trial material facility.

Biologics Manufacturing Centre: This facility offers end-to-end biomanufacturing services. It produces biopharmaceuticals such as viral vector, protein subunit, virus-like particle vaccines and other biologics.

Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences Strategy: The federal government is investing in mRNA, monoclonal antibodies and AI-driven health solutions, with more than $2.5 billion committed to 43 projects since 2020.

Global vaccine leaders investing in Canada

Major global companies investing in Canada’s thriving vaccine industry include:

Moderna is establishing its first mRNA manufacturing facility outside the U.S. in Montréal. This $180 million investment will produce up to 100 million doses per year, building resilience to manage future pandemic responses.

Resilience Biotechnologies, a next-gen vaccine manufacturing company, has expanded its Mississauga site with a $205 million investment to modernize operations and improve national pandemic preparedness.

Sanofi opened a new $800 million state-of-the-art pediatric and adult vaccine manufacturing facility for whooping cough (pertussis) at its Toronto Campus. It is the largest vaccine manufacturing site in Canada, exporting to 60 markets worldwide.

“We are proud of our heritage in Canada, going back over a century. We remain committed to investments and innovation that improve people’s lives around the world.
